Matthew is a Chartered and European Patent Attorney in the Engineering and Designs Group.

Matthew’s practice involves advising on patent matters in the field of engineering and on design matters for a diverse range of products. He regularly drafts and prosecutes patent and design applications in the UK, Europe and internationally. A significant part of Matthew’s practice also involves advising on the validity and infringement of both patents and designs.

Recent examples of Matthew’s work include:

  • Simultaneously providing freedom-to-operate advice and drafting and filing multiple patent applications in relation to client’s bid for a government contract worth several £100 million;
  • Successfully defending patents owned by a well-known UK company in opposition proceedings before the EPO;
  • Advising an innovation group within a French multinational over several years in relation to a major new product launch, involving filing a wide design and patent portfolio and handling multiple associated freedom-to-operate projects; and
  • Having a UK SME’s product listing reinstated to a major online sales website following a takedown based upon an accusation of registered design infringement.

Matthew is also very active outside of his client advisory role. He is the head of the firm’s Practice Committee, overseeing internal and external procedures to ensure the firm’s compliance with changes in law and practice. He is a member of both the CIPA Designs & Copyright Committee and the Council of the British Group of Union IP. He also updates the invalidity chapter of The CITMA & CIPA Community Designs Handbook and has presented on designs in webinars and other CPD events.

Matthew has an MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol and a postgraduate certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary University of London.
