Qualifications
  • Chartered Trade Mark Attorney
  • PhD Anglo-Saxon Literacy, University of Cambridge
  • MA Oriental Studies (Chinese), University of Cambridge

I have long-standing experience in the trade mark industry and joined Boult as a Partner. With my degree in oriental studies (Chinese), I have a particular interest in trade mark matters in China.

I also have a PhD in Anglo-Saxon literacy and have always had an interest in the use of text in society. To me, trade mark law is the most interesting legal subject. It intersects language, commerce and culture; trade marks have a universal relevance and appeal.

I enjoy working with all clients, from private individuals who are just starting a business, right up to multinational corporations, and feel lucky to have such an incredible range of work.

I feel honoured to have spoken on behalf of my profession and my country at a number of delegations to Japan and to China, sometimes accompanying the UK Intellectual Property Office and sometimes also accompanying the UK Minister for Intellectual Property.

Alongside my practice, I enjoy lecturing and contributing to seminars. I have spoken at a meeting with the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA) and at a meeting with the Association of Singapore Patent Attorneys (ASPA). I also lecture on China for the CITMA paralegal course. I am a guest lecturer on the trade mark course at Queen Mary University of London where I am an Honorary Professor.

I have always taken an active role in my profession, including serving as President of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (CITMA). I am currently head of the CITMA China desk and Vice-Chair of the Law & Practice Committee, as well as regularly attending meetings of its Executive Committee and Council.

One of the highlights of my work is discussing matters with my colleagues. Boult is well known for being a very helpful, collegiate firm and we all enjoy working together, with a focus on always putting the client first.

Recent experience

Advising in relation to several multijurisdictional trade mark conflicts and negotiating satisfactory coexistence terms.

Acting for a number of companies in relation to strategy, brand clearance, prosecution, and portfolio assignment issues.
