Trainee
To apply for a trainee position, please send your CV and a covering letter explaining why you would like to join Boult Wade Tennant to recruitment@boult.com. Although we have a particular emphasis on recruitment in the autumn, we accept applications all year.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview and those that are successful will be sent an offer letter.
One thing to remember is that we believe the interview process is a two-way affair. It’s about us finding the right person to join our team but equally, it’s about you finding somewhere where you can flourish and where your career as a patent or trade mark attorney can grow.

Voluntary vacation scheme
The intention of the vacation scheme is to give you the opportunity to gain some work experience as an attorney and to see what it is like to work at our firm. The 2023 scheme begins on 3 July and lasts around one week.
The scheme will be hybrid this year. Monday to Wednesday will be conducted either remotely with participants dialling into discussion groups and presentations or at our London office. The choice will be yours. During the scheme you will work on real cases with attorneys and observe a trade mark or patent moot. You will meet people across the firm and see first-hand how we work. On the Friday you will be invited to attend a social event at the London office.
Entry requirements
To be considered for a place on our training programme you will need at least:
- a 2:1 undergraduate degree (obtained or predicted). Those with a patent interest must have, or be studying for, a technical degree (science and/or engineering).
- 136 UCAS point (AAB) at A level.
For international students, we will expect the equivalent national qualifications.
Application process
The application process for 2023’s scheme is now open. Please send a covering letter and CV to vacationscheme@boult.com no later than 14 April 2023. The hybrid scheme means candidates will have the choice of participating in-person at the London office or online. It will take place in July and the exact date will be confirmed shortly.

Open day
The event is aimed at both university students and recent graduates and is ideal for participants still researching their legal or science career.
It gives participants the chance to ask us questions and learn more about the IP profession as well as get a clearer understanding of what it is like to be a trainee at this firm. The interactive sessions are a fantastic opportunity to network with Boult staff.
During the day candidates hear from a range of experts from both the patent and trade mark profession. Participants are introduced to our core practice areas and are given an overview of our place in the IP market. They have an opportunity to ask our trainees questions and we provide a skills-based session where hopefully they pick up new skills to help them in future applications forms.
The Open Day took place on the 15 September 2022. The application process for 2023’s Open Day will open in Spring 2023. Candidates are welcome to apply to one or more of our schemes (trainee scheme, vacation scheme and/or open day). We are a disabilities inclusive employer.
