IP support and advice

Home > IP services > IP support and advice

Working alongside our teams of IP experts is a range of specialist departments, all operating to enable Boult Wade Tennant to deliver the highest quality advice and client service. The real benefit to our clients is that with dedicated in-house teams of professionals in this IP firm, we can offer a dynamic and agile service. The arrangement, size and structure of the support teams all contribute to making this IP firm one of the leading IP firms in Europe.

Our support staff are highly qualified and are always in high demand. We regularly offer their services directly to clients through secondments or placements. Recently, a records team leader worked with a major communications company to help them with their new docketing system, Ipendo. He organised their database, correcting inaccuracies and inconsistencies and offered advice and training in how to use the platform effectively.

Online services

We have built our reputation for quality service by staying up to date with market innovations to ensure the business community we work with benefits from the opportunity to work faster and smarter. Our online client services portal, BoultView, is a simple, accessible and easy-to-use extranet. It allows you to manage processes and multi-jurisdictional matters and to track the progress of patent and trade mark applications at key stages.

Our ethos is focused on providing excellence in every aspect of our service to clients in conjunction with exceptional value for money. We can utilise a forecasting system, called IP Forecaster, which enables us to provide budget forecasts for client patent portfolios. We are also able to offer secure access to documents. In addition, we can provide regular bespoke reports to clients of all deadlines across the portfolio that they manage, as well as regular or ad hoc reports of management information.

Records and renewals

Our in-house records and renewals department uses a sophisticated case management system, called Inprotech, to monitor trade mark and patent applications from filing to grant, through opposition and pre- and post-registration of renewals. Our management system has been extensively customised within Boult Wade Tennant to capture a wealth of data, which we can provide to our clients at no extra charge. A diary module tracks due dates and deadlines and provides regular reminders of forthcoming deadlines to our attorneys and, if you wish, also to you.

The computerised renewals system is also part of our Inprotech platform. Once all the relevant data for an application for a patent, trade mark or design of an IP right is entered, Inprotech then monitors that application from filing to grant and beyond, including pre- and post-grant renewals, regardless of its jurisdiction.

Some of our clients wish to have renewal fees paid by us automatically, while others prefer to receive renewal reminders and to instruct us on a case-by-case basis. We are able to interface our electronic systems with docketing and document management systems that some clients use. We are flexible in our approach. We interface with clients’ existing systems on a daily basis and we are investigating ways where we can evolve this part of the service still further.

BoultRenew has been developed in direct response to client feedback, building upon Boult Wade Tennant’s expert understanding of trade mark and patent renewal needs. The project has been realised entirely in-house, through a collaboration between attorneys, renewals experts and software developers. We know the value and the importance of reliability when it comes to the maintenance of patents, trade marks and designs. This exciting new service, BoultRenew, allows the user to renew or abandon cases at the touch of a button.

Searching and watching

We have developed an in-house search department because we know our highly skilled professionals will provide the quality of service we want, to ensure we deliver to our clients, no matter which service is being used.

The team provides searches on assignee, inventor, patent/application number, or on subject matter, either by keyword or classification codes. Patent searches are undertaken using either publicly available databases, such as those found online at the UK, EPO, WIPO, USPTO, and JP Patent Office websites, or subscription based commercial databases, such as Minesoft’s PatBase, Thompson’s World Patent Index, or INPADOC. The team also provides trade mark clearance searches, including full clearance searches in the UK and identical searches worldwide. Trade mark searches are undertaken using either publicly available databases, such as those found online at the UK, EUIPO and WIPO websites or via subscription-based commercial databases, such as Marquesa, Saegis, Corsearch, and Thomson Compumark.

Watching services are also carried out by an in-house team and a full list of watching services is available on request. However, regular patent watches by name of assignee, patent/application number, or subject matter are undertaken and generally cover UK, EP and PCT patents designating the UK. Patent watches can be tailored for frequency and country coverage to match our clients’ criteria. Trade mark watches for words, devices and owners are also undertaken. These watches can cover single countries, regional areas or be carried out worldwide. Again these watches can be tailored to match client preferences including reporting methods.
