I am a Patent Trainee at Boult and hold a PhD in applied mathematics from Newcastle University, with my research focusing on quantum optics, condensed matter, and quantum technology.
I was first introduced to AI during my undergraduate degree through courses on machine learning (ML), deep learning and neural networks. I pursued independent projects utilising these tools such as predicting stock market trends and language filtering. This introduction showed me the true scope that AI has and how it can be used in daily life.
AI has an increasingly broad range of potential real-world applications, which bring exciting innovation from our artificial intelligence (AI) clients. I am fascinated by the ideas that clients produce to overcome difficult problems.
I am most skilled in the ability to comprehend new ideas and concepts quickly, scientific writing, and organisation. I assist with the preparation, filing and prosecution of AI-related patent applications in the UK, Europe and worldwide. It’s a fast-paced environment, and the variety of innovations I am exposed to in my work is something I find really interesting.
Something that particularly excites me, and which I have had an interest in since my Masters and PhD, is the idea of quantum AI. While the hardware side of quantum computing is slowly becoming a reality, there is already a huge amount of research going into quantum software. There are already software frameworks for quantum machine learning with the ability to create hybrid quantum-classical ML models and I can’t wait to see what the next steps in this area will be.
