The use of artificial intelligence (AI) provides an opportunity for exciting technological enhancements. Assisting with obtaining patent protection for AI-related inventions in various industries affords me the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of innovation, which is an exciting prospect. The problems being solved in this area are typically complex and my work with my clients is always interesting and challenging.
The applications of AI are extremely far-reaching. AI-specific IP is increasingly being generated and the number of new patent applications that involve AI is seeing rapid growth. To meet this demand, it is essential to keep up with the needs of our clients by ensuring we are comfortable working in the AI space.
My role with AI clients covers the entire AI patent lifecycle, from conducting analysis to assess patentability of AI inventions, including searching for and reviewing prior art; to drafting and filing patent applications for our clients’ inventions and responding to Examination Reports from patent examiners; to providing advice in relation to freedom to operate and infringement. I also assist with commercial strategy, IP portfolio management, licensing and litigation matters.
There is a huge variety of specific subfields or technologies, such as natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, machine learning, robotics, or neural networks. Developing expertise in a particular area allows myself and the Boult AI team to better understand the technical intricacies of inventions and provide more specialized advice to clients.
AI has so much potential to revolutionise our society, but I have a particular interest in the fields of AI vision (including use in autonomous vehicles), adversarial AI networks, AI bias, AI networking (and the Internet of Things), AI content generation (including text, images, and audio), and its application in medical diagnostics, and drug and chemical discovery.
