I completed an MSci in Chemistry at the University of Nottingham, with a year in industry in the Small Molecule Synthesis team at GSK. I went on to complete a PhD at the University of Bristol, investigating the biosynthesis of the antibiotic mupirocin through a combination of total synthesis and biosynthetic feeding studies.
I then moved into a post-doctoral role at the University of Cambridge, working on miniaturising and automating chemical reactions to generate large datasets for use in predictive machine learning models. This was quite a departure from my previous research and broadened my skill set, including developing coding and data analysis expertise.
Following my post-doctoral research, I wanted to apply my scientific background and chemistry skills to a new context, so I joined the University of Cambridge’s Research Operations Office. My work involved drafting and negotiating contracts for epidemiology research, working closely with academics to understand their research and facilitate collaborations. Exposure to Cambridge’s Technology Transfer Office during this time sparked my interest in intellectual property and the patent profession. I was drawn to the opportunity to combine my chemistry knowledge, my drafting skills, and love of wordplay and legal nuance, while continuing to learn about a broad range of new technologies and innovations. I’m excited to apply my chemistry expertise as a Patent Trainee with Boult.
