European Patent Attorney
Chartered Patent Attorney
Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary University of London
BSc Physics, University of Birmingham

After completing my degree in physics, I kicked off my career as a software and electronics engineer working in research & development. I soon realised that a career in R&D wasn’t quite right for me, so after speaking with a friend of mine who was training as a patent attorney at the time I decided to give it a go, and I’ve never looked back.

I love building an understanding of how technology works and explaining it to others; I enjoy communicating; and I relish an argument. At its core, being a patent attorney is just a combination of these things, with some added legal context. It’s the perfect role for me.

Given my physics background, I am comfortable with most engineering subject-matter, however my experience and interest in software and electronics soon resulted in these fields becoming my speciality. I have drafted, prosecuted and defended numerous patent applications relating to a variety of technologies including telecoms & other digital radio communications, analogue & digital electronic circuitry, signal processing, navigation systems, heating systems, medical devices, and more. Having worked for a broad range of clients including individual inventors, start-ups, university spin-outs, SMEs and large multinational corporations, I understand the importance of tailoring my practice to suit the individual needs of a particular client – no two clients are the same.

After qualifying as a patent attorney I worked as an SEP litigator, acting for clients before the UK high court in various (F)RAND rate-setting proceedings with international backdrop, and advising clients in relation to filing strategy, out- and in- licensing approach, portfolio management and program rate setting. This provided eye-opening insight into the endgame for companies investing in the research and development of standards like 5G/6G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and  H.264/5/6, and which aspects of a patent portfolio are important for developing a strong monetisation strategy. I am excited to leverage that unique experience to assist my clients in building a strong, valuable, and cost-effective SEP portfolio.

Experiencias recientes

Acted for Nokia in RAND rate-setting proceedings in the UK High Court in relation to video codec technologies against Acer, Asus, Hisense, Warner Bros Discovery & Paramount.

Advised an emerging SEP holder in relation to filing strategy, licensing/litigation approach and program rates for out-licences to its cellular SEP portfolio.

Conducted a large-scale patent review project in relation to blockchain technologies.
